I was 58 years old... and I hadn't felt empty in four years.
Not once.
I was going maybe twice a week. And even then — I'd get up off the toilet knowing it wasn't all of it.
There was always more still in there.
So I'd carry it around. All day. Heavy. Full. Backed up.
And by dinner?
My stomach would be out to here.
I'd wake up flat in the morning. Everything would fit.
And by eight o'clock I looked five months pregnant.
Hard and tight. Sticking out.
I'd look down and I didn't recognize it.
But here's the part I never told anyone...
The worst part wasn't 8 pm...
It was ten in the morning.
Because by then I was already thinking about it.
Already deciding what I'd change into when I got home.
Already working out whether I could get through dinner in what I had on.
I planned my whole day around my stomach...
Every single day. For four years...
So I did what you do.
I stopped wearing anything fitted.
I have a closet full of clothes I bought and never wore.
I'd reach for the nice top. Look at it. Put it back.
Every time.
I started stepping out of photos. Or standing behind someone. Or holding one of the grandkids in front of me.
I kept my jacket on all night at restaurants. Even when the room was warm.
I'd sit down slowly. Cross my arms over my middle without even thinking about it.
And when my husband reached over on the couch...
I'd move his hand off my stomach.
Not because I didn't want him near me.
Because I didn't want him feeling it.
And then, about six months ago...
I stopped eating dinner with my family.
Not dramatically. Nobody announced anything...
I'd just sit down, take three bites...
And be too uncomfortable to finish.
So I'd get up and start clearing plates while everyone else was still talking.
It got to the point where dinner wasn't worth sitting through...
More fiber. Everyone tells you fiber is the answer, so I ate oatmeal every single morning for two years.
It made me bloat harder.
I found out later why...
When things are already moving slowly, fiber just adds bulk to what's already stuck...
Like adding more cars to a traffic jam.
Cut gluten. Nothing.
Cut dairy. Nothing.
Probiotics — three different brands, eight weeks each. Still backed up.
Two colon cleanses. Miserable. Everything came back within a week.
Laxative pills. They worked the first few times. Then I needed two to do what one used to do...
That scared me more than the bloating did. I could feel my body waiting for the pill instead of just doing it itself. So I stopped.
A $300 food sensitivity test that came back telling me I couldn't eat anything I actually liked.
Water pills, which drained me out and left me puffier than when I started.
And every detox tea on the shelf at the health store. Most tasted like boiled grass and I'd quit by day three.
Nothing worked.
I finally got embarrassed enough to bring it up, so I went to my doctor.
He ran tests. Ordered more tests.
And they all came back the same.
"Everything looks normal, Carol."
Then he shrugged and said some slowing down is just normal at your age.
Try eating smaller portions.
I drove home furious.
Not at him, exactly...
At the idea that I was standing in front of a mirror at 8pm with a stomach that wasn't mine — and being told there was nothing wrong.
So I stopped asking.
And I just accepted it.
She's a nutritionist...
We sat down for dinner and she watched me push my food around the plate because I was already too uncomfortable to eat it.
She put her fork down and said:
"Aunt Carol. Before you give up on this — try one thing for ten nights."
And she told me about something the older women do on the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.
Nicoya is one of the few places on earth where people routinely live past 100.
A doctor went there to research why and...
He noticed something about the older women.
Every evening after dinner, they drank a herbal tea.
Something their grandmothers made. And their grandmothers before that.
They didn't think of it as medicine. It was just what you drink after dinner.
And here's the part that stopped me cold...
They don't have a word for being bloated there...
And every one of those women goes every morning. Like clockwork.
I'd been skeptical about six other things that year.
But I ordered it anyway.
Honestly? Mostly to prove my niece wrong.
Night one, nobody warned me about the bathroom...
I was up twice.
I nearly quit right there.
But it turns out that's the point.
That's water leaving your body — water that had been sitting in there for weeks.
Then came the morning after night one.
And I went.
And it was easier than it had been in years.
Nothing dramatic. No cramping, no rushing.
I just... went. And it was done.
I stood there in the bathroom thinking...
Is this what everyone else feels like every day?
Less puffy around the eyes.
My jawline was back.
I didn't say anything to anyone...
I thought I was imagining it.
Night six, my rings slid onto my fingers.
I hadn't been able to wear them in almost two years.
And I was going every single morning by then.
Like clockwork. I hadn't done that since my forties.
That's when I stopped thinking I was imagining it.
Night ten. We went out for dinner. My husband and some friends.
I sat down at seven o'clock.
I ate a full plate. I went back for seconds. I had dessert.
And I stayed at that table for two hours.
I didn't unbutton anything.
I didn't count the minutes until I could leave.
First time in four years.
About two months in, my daughter sent me photos from my granddaughter's birthday.
I opened them on my phone expecting to do what I always do — scroll past the ones I'm in.
And I stopped.
Because I was in them.
Not behind someone. Not holding a child in front of me. Not half out of frame.
Just standing there. In a fitted top...
And I couldn't even remember making the decision to get in the photo.
I just had.
The scale was down about nine pounds by then too, even though I hadn't changed a thing about what I ate. I hadn't been trying.
But honestly? The scale wasn't the part that got me.
Because here's what nobody prepares you for...
It isn't the flat stomach...
It's that the thinking stops.
Four years of planning my outfits around eight o'clock...
Four years of clearing plates early...
Four years of moving my husband's hand...
And then one day you just... don't anymore.
You get dressed without checking how you look from the side.
You sit at the table until everyone's finished.
You get in the photo.
And then there was a Thursday, about three months in.
My husband came home from work with flowers...
No occasion. No birthday, no anniversary, nothing I'd forgotten.
I asked him what they were for and he just said, "You've seemed happier."
That's when it hit me how far it had gone.
He'd never once mentioned my stomach. Not in four years. Not once.
But he'd noticed me pulling away...
He'd noticed me clearing plates early, keeping my jacket on, moving his hand off me on the couch.
He just thought that was who I'd become.
He wasn't giving me flowers because I looked different...
He was giving me flowers because he'd gotten his wife back.
I wasn't asking for a flat stomach like I had at thirty...
I just wanted to feel normal again...
And that's exactly what I got.
I wasted four years.
Four years of fiber that made it all worse...
Of cleanses that did nothing...
Of a $300 test that told me to stop eating the food I love...
Four years of being told everything looks normal.
And it was one cup of this tea after dinner that fixed what none of it could.
So if you've been dealing with the same thing...
If you've been going twice a week and never feeling finished...
If you look five months pregnant by eight o'clock every evening...
Especially if a doctor has ever told you it's just your age...
I just want you to look at this after dinner tea.
That's all. Just look at it.
Because four years from now, I don't want you standing in front of a mirror at 8pm...
Wishing you'd tried something different tonight.
